My top 9 films of 2016

The Revenant – A bold, distinctive work with several bonkers bits, a supernatural element and immersive visuals and impressive performances.
Room This was emotional (I cried a lot), focusing on a mother-son relationship in the most extreme circumstances. Naturalistic performances and brilliant filming of a confined space.
Spotlight – Did its subject matter the compliment of emulating its research and carefully conveying what it had found.
Eddie The Eagle – hyped all spring in the UK, but it was a pleasure to watch a film that was so eager to please.
Zootropolis aka Zootopia – Clever and inventive, well-cast, centred around the stereotype-busting Judy Hopps, referencing past Disney movies, Gangster and Buddy-Cop Movies.
X-Men Apocalypse – I was pleasantly surprised by this, I really liked the baby x-men and how it worked as a response to the ‘find them’ of the last film.
Love & Friendship – Jane Austen goes over to the dark side. A little. And it was very funny to watch manipulative Lady Susan talk and talk to get her own way.
Arrival – talk about living up to the hype. Smart, emotive and substantive sci-fi. So much about this is excellent.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – suitably more grown-up than ‘Harry Potter’ with interesting, timely themes, despite the 1920s setting, but a bit of a romp with wonderous moments too.
In the order I saw them, not of preference. I went to see 40 films last year. Previous lists can be found here: Dreamwidth, from 2012 on"> and Livejournal for a more comprehensive list.
