4.1 The Ghost
Ho-hum. I wasn’t excited when I heard they were bringing in Ghost Rider to the show (there are several reasons why I never went to see those films and the premise is one of them), and having seen what they’ve got to offer I’m not that impressed. It’s a genre shift, even if they make him ultimately an Inhuman or what-have-you, and if I wanted to watch Supernatural, I’d be watching it.
Also, leave May alone, mysterious box SFX.
But oh, how utterly delightful to see bruised Daisy being objectified right from the outset and ditto naked Ada. Really made me feel like the show is welcoming me. I shouldn’t be clutching at the straws that neither May nor Simmons were objectified.
Though I was actually amused by all the REBELLIOUS! black leather on display.
So, the set-up work was done, the team is split up with the new director having put juniors over seniors – surely May respects Simmons more after her outburst. And Daisy is on the outs, being an outlaw/vigilante in heavy eyeliner and repeating herself because, like her team, she's very sad about losing so many people.
As trailed at the end of the last series, John Hannah is a regular (yay! Although I don’t know what the American audience will make of two Scotsmen exchanging dialogue and probably making each other even more Scottish. Will there need to be subtitles?) And if last season ripped off The Martian, this season rips off Ex Machina. I know Ada probably comes from Ada Lovelace, but it’s one consonant away from Ava. Unfortunately for AoS, Humans and Westworld are also covering this territory. And they might have lampshaded it, but a scientist in a Marvel property trying to atone through science/via a protective robot. What could possibly go wrong?
I may not have been paying enough attention, but is Yo-yo’s characterisation consistent? For all her flirtiness with Mac, I still expect her to die tragically and Daisy/Mac to develop. Fitzsimmons have moved on to coupledom, but it may be under threat because of work (or she just doesn’t like soccer and who can blame her?)
As for the ship I do care about, I know Mac’s line about being glad to catch up with May was more about his not getting on so well with May, but I’ll take it and Coulson’s chattiness during his backgammon game with May as establishing affection I can read a lot into. They can take their time after Andrew and the less important Constance. Of course, May didn’t react because she was hallucinating (time will tell if this is general or related to Coulson being technically dead) and OF COURSE she didn’t mention it, being stoic, and to cut her some slack, a step behind the audience.
Thing is, in an attempt to get a bigger audience of a certain type, the show is in danger of shedding viewers like me.
