shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (POI Zoe and John at work)
[personal profile] shallowness
Over twenty months ago, I was happily watching the start of season 3 of PoI as it aired on the telly, when it went on a break and I didn’t realise it had come back until after too many episodes had been shown for me to catch up. I decided to buy the DVD, which I eventually did and I started rewatching the show over Christmas. I then had a month and a half where I didn’t have access to the DVDs, but that has been resolved and I’ve now rewatched the first eight episodes of the season. From here on in, it’ll be all new to me, give or take a couple of spoilers – it’s amusing that five (or one of its channels) is now on to airing the fifth season.

There was a weird sense of half-remembering stuff, usually one big thing about the Number of the Week, but also of rediscovery as Shaw joins Team Machine, Root’s new relationship with the Machine develops, and the now demoted into uniform Carter caries on with her solo mision against HR. There’s been a melancholy about Carter, a sense of what might have been between her and Reese. I think they didn’t fully convince with her vendetta against HR being all about Cal.

What I love is that the show just gets on with the overall story, a new pro-privacy conspiracy is introduced in the second episode and recurs in the sixth episode. It keeps the need for entertainment and forward momentum in mind.

My favourite episodes out of these eight were 3.3 Lady Killer (where Carter, Zoe and Shaw team up and Root escapes from the institution) and 3.5 PA3rPBOP (which features Jen the kid spy, Shaw backstory and an I-want-to-know-what-happens-next-now endin) but I enjoyed rewatching all the episodes, although I started watching ‘Endgame’ a little too late to give it the attention it deserved, probably.

But with the echoes between Harold and Root (and the tensions about the Machine) and Reese (a chivalrous sap at times) and Shaw to explore, I look forward to finally seeing what happens next.

Also, I saw Hidden Figures over the weekend, I was thoroughly entertained and rated the script highly for what it managed to do. Great to see Taraji P. Henson lap up the role.
