shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (POI Shaw)
[personal profile] shallowness
Before I forget, it you want a belly laugh, watch this week’s Would I Lie To You (I occasionally indulge). It features Bob Mortimer and, as a consequence, the guests on the opposing team wiping their eyes because of laughter. By the end of the show, I was joining them.

Killing Eve 1.5 I Have a Thing About Bathrooms

Good one. Frank was so very obnoxious. A few moments that had appeared in the trailers made more sense in context – a traumatised Eve worrying at the crack in the glass, and at least that was an attempt to be more realistic about shattered glass panes than is generally the case in TV or films.

There were a couple of surprises – I jumped at Villanelle’s appearance in the safe house, and Kenny is Carolyn’s son! There was an immediate reaction of ‘of course’ – especially after the detail that he’d lost his father – but I’d never thought of it. And I don’t even want to complain about nepotism, because I like them both.

Nasty stuff was going on, but Villanelle was acting with a purpose – to get at Frank. I’m not saying that she didn’t enjoy the stuff with Eve, which was creepy and sexy and twisted, but she wanted the info about him from her. The point about who the 12 are and later her calling out her handler were fair enough. Although naming the bad guys with something the writers of Chuck or Alias, which are different kettles of fish, would come up with is nagging at me.

I laughed at her scene with Frank. But the twist at the end, that she used the detail of Oksana’s killing career starting with castration, I think, to mess with Eve or send a false message. And Eve didn’t tell Carolyn the most creepy part: that she’d dressed him up in the dress and all that meant. Gross and intriguing.

My theory is that Oksana may have castrated the first guy because of what he did to someone else, maybe Anna, but it’s quite possible we’ll be wrong-footed there too. Anyway, Nadiya is still alive to prove Villanelle lied about what went down. So, before the trailer, we knew what the next episode will be about.

Also, Villanelle appreciated Nico’s moustache.

But what is it going to be like for Eve after two encounters with Villanelle and a home invasion? If she’s barely spent any time there now because of work, how much more is she going to want to avoid being there/wanting to move?

Strictly Results

Janette didn’t dislocate, anything, I hope, in the lady-centric routine. I really liked the move where some of them fell back on the others’ soles and heels.

Didn’t like the slit in Tess’s dress, Claudia’s was better, Darcey’s outfit was boring, but Shirley’s wasn’t, so she wins.

I realised I’d been wrong about Joe’s position on the leaderboard, and thought Charles was in trouble. Until Saturday, I’d assumed Seann was in trouble, but even if he was (and we’ll never know for sure unless if it’s leaked or we read into what happens in the coming weeks) his score was too high for him to be in plausible danger. The show itself was going for the narrative of everyone being really close scoreswise. Craig was arguing for people to take even more risks, but I’d like to caveat that with ‘not with the lifts’.

They divvied the results into three again, and I couldn’t be mad that they’d relieved Ranj before Faye. A ‘devastated’ Charles was in the bottom two again. Karen can’t have been too chuffed about doing the lift again.

I doubt if the younger celebs could pull off Danny’s headstand.

I’d have given the Backstreet Boys a seven for entertainment value. They worked the crowd, clearly sung live, lack a Gary Barlow for a respectable slide into man band, and made me snicker with their moves.

BREAKING NEWS (1): Carlton is judging next week instead of Bruno. A nation’s first response: ‘Well, at least it isn’t Donny Osmond.’

BREAKING NEWS (2): Innovation! A part of me still wants them to swap partners for one show, just to see if other pros can help the people who aren’t improving (Charles), but instead we get ‘Couples’ Choice’ with three really broad categories. (Burlesque???) My first response: ‘Isn’t this going to help the ringers even more?’

Seann was safe. Awkward celebrations ensued. Kate was saved and properly grateful. The producers decided to torture Joe – he clearly took a while to process that it wasn’t them – and Katie was rightly in trouble. Unless if Charles had dropped Karen on the head and defaulted, she was always going to be sent home, but she’d obviously come to peace with it and felt good about the experience, so that’s all right.

Also, I seem to be intentionally watching repeats of Monarch of the Glen, despite not watching it when it first aired. Whimsy runs through it all, when it’s not being an ad for the Scottish highlands.
