shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Downton Abbey Edith)
[personal profile] shallowness
Episode 37 (had to rewatch it because it was just that good) to Episode 42

So Lizzie is being a bit bitchy when not sighing over Wickham’s shoulders/texts, but it’s all about their financial woes. Ricky Collins’s ‘proposal’ to Lizzie didn’t quite work for me, although how condescending he was totally justified her, er, strong refusal. Hello, angry!Lizzie. (Seriously, incandescent with rage. And I guess not being allowed to speak would do that to her.)

I liked the return of/use of Charlotte the editor in episodes 38 and 40. (Missed that during the Netherfield stay.) Could have done with a reference to Wickham here, maybe. The sudden appearance of his texting self raised more questions than anything, really - how did they get each other's numbers, why now in canon? etc. Equal weight was given to the spinster/witch question. I know that he’s only a flirty distraction to Lizzie, but given what’s surely coming, he needed a little more presence, maybe.

Ep 41 (no Lizzie, but nice variation on the lead in). Um, maybe I wouldn’t have put Charlotte sitting there. Loved the final little flicker of doubt on her face, can she put up with THAT all the time? As the stakes are different to the book, it’s a relief that savvy Charlotte is just being offered a business partnership, even with someone as clueless of boundaries and, indeed, generally clueless, as Ricky Collins, and one that, presumably, she might walk away from once she’s got as far as she can go/the economy picks up. I really like the actor, even if I sometimes think they were asking too much of him with the material (because of the latter’s lack of cohesion, not the his limitations) and thought how Charlotte eased him into a better pitch and the shift that took place within one vlog, with him not getting the nuances of her response that were clear to the viewers, was reall well done script-wise. I mean, it happens about equally quickly in the book IIRC, but still. I am being complimentary.

Whoa, ep 42, that got really emotional – good stuff from both actresses, as Lizzie pushed it just that little too far and got even more hurt by Charlotte’s honesty. Nice illustration of Charlotte the pragmatist and Lizzie the idealist. I could get into what I really think of the advanced degree argument, but instead I’ll just note that I was right and Julia Cho looks better sitting on the left. ETA: I loved the little note saying that Lizzie had spent ages editing this on her own.

It's interesting too how, while this is about romance and marriate (brought in by Mrs Bennet or Lizzie's interpreation thereof), it's about jobs too. The way what happened in the book is transposed doesn't always work for me, but it really did WRT Charlotte and Lizzie's choices here.

My feeling is that they're doing great on the BIG DRAMATIC SCENES, but maybe need to work a little more on build up?

I seem to have settled on watching the show in blocks, defined by how much time I have or what's going on in the story, so that I have enough to chew over.
