I just read an excellent fic that I would rec here, but it's locked to AO3 users, so it felt pointless because of the caveat, but then I thought I could post a link to my AO3 bookmarks, if you want to have a look at all that I've bookmarked there, as it will likely get updated before I do my next recs post. And if you look for 'Favorite Stories' here, you'll find the equivalent on ff.net.

LBD 2014

I finally caught up with the 2014 continuations of the LBD verse. (Scroll down to the bottom here.) Thoughts )

I see that the people behind LDB have made other shows, although none of them appeal hugely - I’ve read and disliked the ‘completed’ book of Sanditon, haven’t read Frankenstein, and Emma Approved would have to battle with my love for Clueless and that Emma is far from my favourite Austen novel.

So, without my meaning for it to happen, it became months since I last watched an episode of The Autobiography of Jane Eyre. Perhaps I prefer catching up with webseries rather than watching them live, never mind the transmedia of it all. Last night, because ITV’s Player wouldn’t work (it’s the most convoluted of the players) and I wanted something a little more cosy than BtVS, I finally got around to watching the final episodes of AoJE

Episodes 92 to 95 )

EDIT: If you want to watch The Autobiography of Jane Eyre, go here for the videos and Storified stuff.

In short, I think they’re handling the Rivers better than the Reeds. Also, I refer to what happens next in the books when discussing episodes.

In greater detail )

Then there was only one episode left and I’d be caught up, but I had to switch off the computer, so I never got caught up. I almost don’t want to, because then I’d be watching live and that would be new and weird.

[personal profile] purple_cube asked for my fannish timeline over the past ten years - which fandom I most associate with each year etc.

Picking one fandom for some years was really hard, because it turns out I’ve always been multifannish, which the nature of livejournal encouraged. But here goes!

Jane Eyre is number 12 in the Observer’s top 100 novels, and Robert McCrum explains why here. As I’d been watching a lot of The Autobiography of Jane Eyre over the weekend, this jumped out at me:

Charlotte Bronte takes her audience by the throat with a fierce narrative of great immediacy. Jane Eyre's voice on the page is almost hypnotic. The reader can hardly resist turning the next page, and the next…

In an extraordinary breakthrough for the English novel, borrowing the intimacy of the 18th-century epistolary tradition, Charlotte Brontë had found a way to mesmerise the reader through an intensely private communion with her audience. We, the author, and Jane Eyre become one. For this, she can be claimed as the forerunner of the novel of interior consciousness.

The adaptation was having a similar pull on me, as did LBD at times - my tendency is to watch these vids in blocks that are as long as television shows. It’s partly the format – ‘diarist’ speaking to viewer, but it’s also wondering how they'll adapt a beloved story factor.

Anyway, thoughts about episodes 21 to 30.

Makes no allowance for people who haven't read the book. )

Hmm, might as well have posted my response episode by episode, as that jumped a little all over the place.

I heard about The Autobiography of Jane Eyre a while ago, kept the link, was reminded of its existence by redbrunja this week, was intrigued and watched a batch of episodes last night and a pile more this morning, so I’m up to episode 20. I've had one window open with the Story list and been mainly watching the vids on YouTube.

I have thoughts, which I have tried to synthesise rather than dumping my reactions to each episode, but it still got long. spoilers up to episode 20, references to The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and I presume you've all read Jane Eyre ) I want to know what they’ll do next. Even though I know what happens next.

Yesterday, I finally posted all the fic that I’d posted to Dreamwidth to Archive Of Our Own. Yay! It only took me years to do so. If I were going to archive my fic elsewhere, I might not be as determined to post everything there. This still means that I need to repost fic that was only posted at lj and ff.net (and Geocities, it’s that old) to both DW and AO3. It will probably also take ages, but I’ll warn if I get a burst of energy and start spamming.

For now, here are some links that I found interesting, most of which are Internet old. Georgette Heyer quote icons; The Hour meta; The Lizzie Bennet Diaries pics; Much Ado about Nothing interview; Pacific Rim meta; Paradox talk and a list about the awesomeness of Farscape. )

shallowness: HP films' Minerva reads the Daily Prophet (Minerva reads)
I read that it was Rowling's lawyers (or one of them) who let slip that she was Robert Galbraith. I'm sure that those few who went and bought the book and enjoyed it are feeling smug. Despite having endured The Casual Vacancy more than enjoyed it, I daresay I will read the book at some point.

For now I'm currently reading and loving The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I'm in the final stretch, and as soon as I close my laptop, I'll be finishing it tonight, I hope.

A quote:
"Secrets have power," [...] "And that power diminishes when they are shared, so they are best kept and kept well. Sharing secrets, real secrets, important ones, with even one other person, will change them. Writing them down is worse, because who can tell how many eyes might see them inscribed on paper, no matter how careful you might be with it. So it's really best to keep your secrets when you have them, for their own good, as well as yours."

But the main thing I wanted to say was that over the past several days, I have been reading an amnesia! fic that’s lampshaded the trope, somewhat, bless – I wouldn’t be reading it if I didn’t enjoy the trope. Ruminating on said trope in fanfiction. Also spoilers for/discussion of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Tin Man, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Avengers Assemble )
shallowness: Margaret Hale of North and South adaptation sitting at desk writing (Margaret North and South writing)
I keep watching stuff and don't have a chance to tidy up my thoughts and post before watching more stuff. This harks back to Saturday, when I watched The Lizzie Bennet Diaries - episode 90 to 100.

Episode by episode reactions )

And now, there are Sanditon vids, I see from Gigi's Twitter feed – I hadn’t heard about them via fandom, which suggests it's not bothering with them. I don’t know whethere I will either, as I don’t love the Domino concept, but I do like Gigi. I read the ghost written completed ‘Sanditon’ once and hated it. There was about one paragraph that felt like vintage Austen and that’s all I recall. So, I don’t know.

I do hope I see more of all the LBD actors on other stuff. I mostly thought they were great. I will be interested in how LBD affects other literary adaptations, webseries etc.

As for the whole phenomenon, possibly spoilery summary )

And hey, it inspired some ficcing from me. Now I hope to read other people’s! Please rec all awesome LBD stuff to me, as I've been avoiding it to stay unspoiled. Fic, artwork, meta etc is welcome - esp. gen, Lizzie/Darcy, Jane/Bing and crossovers.
