I think at one point (relating to ‘structured debate’), I may have thought ‘AMY SANTIAGO, MY CURRENT SITCOM SPIRIT ANIMAL’. I can well believe Jake and Amy didn’t discuss having kids properly before, so what ensued was fascinating, not so much for Jake’s stunning admission of having daddy issues (no, RLY, Perralta etc etc). Also, 36 is not that young for a woman thinking of baby-making, sweets.

The episode also gained an automatic bonus, because when I saw Hitchcock and Scully at the hospital, I was expecting them to get sick, so when that didn’t happen, my relief was great. Of course, everyone in the precinct turned up for one reason or another.

What was clear was how much Jake and Amy love each other – the thought of losing her lent him some clarity of mind, the callbacks and the way he took on the structured debate.

I was expecting it to be the police officer outside the door, not Pam (oh Pam, I doubt the Antonio Banderas lookalike would have given your family all that money, and is the show seriously claiming that Outlander is this generation’s Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman?)

Killing Eve 2.3 The Hungry Catepillar

Oh dear. I’d hoped things would continue at the level of the previous ep, but after too many scenes, I had to admit this isn’t as good as it used to be. We moved straight into Eve talking to Konstatin and then, poof! Villanelle was all better and back to killing people her version of discreetly, but it didn’t seem like that much time had passed on the Polastri/MI6 front. At least Villanelle called out Raymond expositioning to her about the Ghost, but that’s what he was doing. And Jenna or Jemma was just awful, as much of a caricature as Cambridge Boy (main contribution to episode: egregious manspreading).

Even Eve’s obsession is, as obsessions are, wearing for her husband and us. Though when Villanelle does gift her with lipstick with a nasty surprise, you can understand apple-related freak outs. Even if they are epic and seem all about her, her obsession is a psychopath, Nico. That is not to say I don’t sympathise with him, especially as Eve is ignoring all warnings from sources reliable or not.

What was better: well, the poor Kenny quotient was high, as he realised Eve was bossing him as much as his mother. Who has hobbies like Pointless. I think Pointless is a genius quiz show as much as anyone, but…well, I laughed as I was meant to.

And there was lots of Villanelle dressing up and being more herself. The Russian-doing-Scottish accent was genius. Her attitude around the hotel was fun. The disguise to get into Nico’s school was spot on. Most of her other outfits were a reaction to what she’s been forced to wear lately.

By the end of her first scene with Raymond, I was giving her licence to bump him off. That Konstantin came looking for his lucrative, dangerous daughter figure, not actual family is interesting – as was his response to getting shot by her (when you think of Villanelle’s response to Eve stabbing her when they meet again). And Villanelle-Konstantin roadtrip = entertainment value. Was what he said about Raymond true?

The eroticism between Eve/Villainelle was vamped up to the max, between the heavy breathing at the door and the blood-red lips.

The actors are doing sterling work, but chunks of this were obvious and not good enough. What a shame this show is having second-season issues.
