One thing I’ve been wondering since watching the last batch, what is it with Lizzie and Lydia’s hang-ups about the word ‘dramatic’?
Anyway QA7 to ep 70 (yes, I'm coming along apace.)
QA7 - Meh. The main thing I took out of it was that maybe they’re considering Mary-Lizzie interaction some day.
63 Unexpected Returns – Caroline fake fakes unconvincingly and it was satisfying to have Lizzie see right through her and question her into giving herself away. (I would still like to see Lizzie’s impersonation of CdB return though.) Interesting divergence from the book and making the most of the different format – i.e. that everyone wants to read the letter.
Lydia 17 There’s Something About Mary – they’ve been wanting to use that title forever obviously. Wait, with the shout-out to Mansfield Park, is Eddie Eddie Bertram!? The possibilities...although you can’t equate Mary Bennet to Mary Crawford!!! Meanwhile, just as we had the breakthrough of Lydia noticing all was not right with someone else, she gets the bombshell that Mary was getting paid to tutor her. Ouch. And so the ‘maybe family isn’t all it’s cracked up to be’ stuff continues for the littlest Bennet.
64 C vs. C - In which Lizzie continues to have Caroline’s number and while madam is spinning that Lizzie is all alone and needs her friendship we have epic BFFdom from Charlotte. Also the fact that hurting Jane is a red button for Lizzie.
I want something about Darcy angsting about whether he should watch the videos and then doing it anyway, because he can’t resist. In canon or not. Yay to them using the characters’ viewership and an onscreen conversation about editing.
Lydia 18 Friction - well done, Mary. It makes total sense to me that she’d be hurt and angry that Lydia ran off and showed her her position in the pecking order (because of Lydia’s insecurities and crazy rationalisation). I meant to ask in the last post whether Mary had ever got invited to do a play with the others as a child. Aww.
Ep 65 Turkey Days - Lizzie assumes that she had one extra viewer at least then:) I suppose, based on Caroline’s behaviour, that it’s not unreasonable. I suspect that Bing won’t see them for longer than her parents given the way she was talking (but then they’ll lose their confusion at the eventual Lizzie/Darcy... so maybe they won't go there.) Contrived reason to keep Lizzie and Charlotte in the offices/that set is contrived. I’d have insisted Ricky told Charlotte himself. I mean, she might talk him out of forcing them to stay.
Ep 19 Friends -L east relevant thing, but the official Bennet sofa! I think they should use it more. Meanwhile the Mary-Lydia was incredibly touching, stumbling through ‘not that I know much about that’ (friendship)and ‘who does that?’ (tells other people how they feel).
Lydia’s QA2 So that IS her bedroom. That was the best Q and A so far with the zipping through it (to the point where I almost lost track of what she was answering) amusingly and bonus Kitty, who apparently hates being filmed.
Ep 66 Giving Thanks - started off nicely, but in terms of story development wasn’t up to much, except that Lizzie’s willing to blackmail Mr Pompous for her BFF and use Lydia to do it (effective). Did Charlotte just drop a Ms de Burk? Heh.
Lydia Totes Thanksgiving - had more story development really, with Lydia refusing to accept that her sisters are moving away (unlike their mother) but remembering turkey in time, and we got to know that Lizzie got back safely and look forward to the three sisters being back together. (Ooh, has Jane caught up on Lizzie’s videos?)
Ep 67 - Lizzie advertising Lydia’s videos, even though she’s too busy to watch them (!) was funny, but everyone had a cameo (and we had a nice Mr Bennet impersonation), we confirmed Jane is caught up, but Bing hasn’t reached out and George is back in town and it makes Lizzie all thin lipped. Whelmed to underwhelmed? Except by Charlotte’s nifty hat. That I liked.
Ep 68 - But, given canonical evidence, even in the LBDverse, that’s only part of the Wickham story. I’d forgotten the names. From this distance, Darvin and Batman are ridiculous, and spelunking was a nice meta borrow. The show’s making me think I should now capitalise The Letter whenever it is referenced.
Ep 69 Summer Friends - priceless beginning with the double appearance of the title and the epic fit of laughter, plus Jane’s eventual Lydia, especially the shoulders. Aww, Lydia, growth isn’t so bad (what are you, sixteen? In the book yes, but not in this adap.)
Ep 70 New Jane.- Wow, Jane is provoking good stuff out of her sisters these days, although I suggest she reviews the episode where Ricky Collins puts forward the job offer again. I don’t think Lizzie rejecting that needs much psychoanalysis, but let’s go along with it. Her last year of her Master’s degree is time to ask what next. If she did her undergraduate course with Charlotte locally too, it is maybe time for her to stretch her wings, and the prep work has been ongoing with Lydia (and their mother)’s angst about things not staying as they were. Feistier Jane is able to have a proper job and independence to get to know the city more than Book!Jane. Even though I think Jane and Bing are ‘totes adorbs’ and wouldn’t be surprised if there were a revelation about the alleged indiscretion at the birthday party (a misunderstanding or even someone misrepresenting something Jane did to Darcy and Bing surely), that didn’t sound like denial from her to me.
