Ghosts 4.5

I laughed the most at Mike’s adventures in that giant bubble thing! They found another ghost – well, Robin had found him first - and I was all ‘Grr, how very dare you replace Mary with a bloke’, but the found family were, indeed, a bit much, as Alison had feared and tried to prevent. But she also had to deal with a competitive neighbour who moved from being worried that turning the Gatehouse into a B&B was going to turn the place into Blackpool, until he became competition, and Alison turned to Julian. He might not know judo but he fancies himself a Frances Urqhart, (as did a certain tarantula owner who was in the news around the time I watched this) and so Alison got into a war of dirty tricks and maybe won it along with a happy compromise with Mike about how to attract a few new guests.

Robin using a fake ascension to get the rest of the ghosts off Maddox’s back was sly. Oh, and we had Lady Fanny falling out of the window, which we haven’t had in a while.

4.6

Found myself admiring the structure a bit more than chuckling along, although there were chuckles. There was a sense of a more classic farce as Julian’s version of good intentions, Robin’s traumas and Alison and Mike’s bear war ran along their tracks, confused the running gag of Kitty saying the opposite of what she meant until she didn’t, Thomas and Pat pondering veganism, and Lady Button’s taxidermy appreciation. Funniest line may have been the plague bearer going ‘is it too soon?’ because of a plague joke six centuries later.

But they made great use of the teaser about a fire and how many near misses there were to a conflagration starting. Robin’s flashbacks felt very horrory, and I really liked how it turned out that his cause of death wasn’t directly the bear, but rather a lightning strike, which explains his affinity for electricity. After all the running from the dead bear, he did have a heroic moment. I’m going to choose to believe Mike saw his outline.

I was with Alison about the bear, but the ending, with the Gatehouse destroyed and that hope of a first step towards turning Button House into a hotel and of making some money gone was a downer. But Alison was right, it had been a cause of stress all series between her and Mike.

I still haven’t hunted Ghosts US up now that it’s available on iPlayer.
