2.19 This Kiss

Reality (or ‘reality’ as it’s Bluebell) was sinking in for the new co-owners of the Rammer Jammer. The town was sceptical about them running it, and, worse, the previous staff didn’t want to work for them.

Tansy demanded to know if George still had feelings for Zoe, after he gallantly offered to buy six extra copies of the New York Times (the shop was refusing to sell it any more because Zoe and George were the only two buying copies and he had to buy eight). My main thought was that it hadn’t reached the internet yet then? George claimed to have no feelings for Zoe, but it seemed as though George/Tansy’s compatibility was about to be tested again by a town thing run by Dash involving Shakespeare. See also Lavon/Annabeth.

There was also some loose talk about mental health and being crazy (and Zoe’s unusual behaviour is only in a different accent to that of everyone else in Bluebell.) She took Brick up on an offer of counselling because she had a turgid dream about George kissing her, and acting like he was stoned before then. I note in passing that this dream was set where the end of s1 kiss happened. Brick turned out to be not terrible as a therapist, but that was mainly because he was dealing with Zoe and Lavon’s issues this episode rather than mental ill health.

Wade and Lemon had to face a montage of problematic candidates, ending with Magnolia (heh). Both used their veto so they hired no-one, then went behind each other’s backs to hire the most attractive member of the opposite sex (can’t see Bluebell taking to snails, though.)

Meanwhile thanks to theatre camp as punishment and Tansy’s laryngitis, Zoe’s best efforts to avoid George, as Brick advised, led to her having to play Juliet to George’s Romeo, so she used the ‘medical emergency’ card. It then seemed as if George was equally unenthusiastic about partnering her to spare ‘Tansy’s feelings’ and so they engaged in a scheme to get Wanda and Tom to do it instead, which involved Zoe bee-sitting. Of course, it ended badly. I couldn’t get over all the bees having girls’ names.

Wade and Lemon lost their chef because he couldn’t cook grits; Lemon, his replacement, lost her rag; and when Magnolia pointed out that their new waitress was as underage as she was, they lost their licence. They still both wanted to be boss even after Wally gave them a pep talk, and the person they had to face to get the license back was someone they’d turned down as a cook (because she had no experience and was really demanding.)

Meanwhile Lavon twigged that Brick was avoiding Shelby – Shelby had noticed this too.

Zoe and George were going to end up playing the scene despite their best/wackiest efforts. I remember there was a nod to rehearsals when it was Gilbert and Sulivan.

Lemon and Wade’s bribery worked out for them!?

Meanwhile we got to see bits of the show – Shelby started doing the seven ages of man speech (badly) and they inexplicably skipped the actual lines that speak to Brick’s age and fears behind not telling her he’s actually sick. Backstage, Lavon confessed why he’d been avoiding doing this to AB, who remembered his theatrical disaster but talked him into giving a somewhat hammy performance as Hamlet with her. Then we had George!Romeo determined to kiss his Juliet to prove to Tansy’s girl logic that he wasn’t interested, but Zoe tried to rewrite the script so that there was no kissing, so it was a battle of wills, they ended up kissing anyway, and Tansy seemed okay with this. Zoe had an honest exchange with Wade about how he’d messed her up, a less honest exchange with George about how kissing him had meant nothing to her, as proved by her secret reaction to the news that the bees had taken over Tansy’s trailer so she was going to move in with George.

Inspired by Lavon, Brick told Shelby, but not us, what his diagnosis had really been. [Edited for typos 30/5/25.]
