Back to Button House

I’ve fallen behind on most of my shows, mainly because I’ve been watching and catching up on the gymnastics world championship. Simone Biles is amazing, isn’t she? I mean, they all are (says the woman who’s only done a few so-called ‘cartwheels’ in her life) but she’s outstanding and seemed to be in such a good place.
Ghosts was one of those shows. There seems to be an outpouring of love for it, which I’ve been avoiding for spoilers, because this fifth series will be its last. (Sob, but also respect.)
5.1 Fools
First off, I chuckled quite a bit at the show, and I felt I should record that because I always talk about having more feels than chuckles. I was caught up in it, because I must have switched my brain off not to notice Alison’s pregnancy tells, even though I’ve been wondering for several series if they’d go there.
Anyway, great opening with no sign of the ghosts and Alison wandering around the big empty house, then coming to tell Mike they’d passed on when, ‘surprise!’ they all yell and she bursts into tears. (What did I think? That she was distraught that they weren’t gone? She doesn’t hate them anymore.) Cue the revenge, as Humphrey’s head egged on prank warrior Alison (loved how you could see her rousing in the eyes. Good job, Charlotte Ritchie.) At the same time, Mike, who’d already been the grown up worrying about their finances (switch off all the lamps you have on in every room, for a start, says every viewer who lived through last year’s hike in energy prices), would have to host a loss adjustor, there to assess their insurance claim for the gatehouse fire at the end of the last series. This meant that he had to rehash the story (which I honestly only hazily remembered) which sounded as daft as any set-up on this show is, while also remembering to keep quiet about the ghosts’ involvement.
Pranking all the ghosts individually was a good reintroduction to the characters (if you need to do that at the start of the fifth series.) The prank on Thomas did feel cruel by this show’s standards, more so than scaring Robin witless with talking animals. The Captain made a big deal of Pat being The Guileless One, when, hello, Kitty was right there next to him and had fallen for the balloon thing. I probably did chuckle loudly at Sam Fox being Julian’s Achilles heel. Very much liked Pat and his invulnerability to pranks as a former Scout leader, and yeah, nicely crafted at the end when he thought the truth was a prank.
Good to have it back!
