Belatedly,
Ghosts 5.5 Carpe Diem
They’re ramping up the poignancy now! If I had a minor quibble, it was that Alison was totally unaware of what the ghosts were going through and was absent as they waited for midnight. But then, her and Mike’s attempt to turn back time a little and have one last night of partying (doomed to fail) was thematically on point, and the viewers knew before they did what the ending would be. (I love the show for always slipping in a Mike POV shot, where it was just him and Alison line dancing.)
I don’t think I ever bought Robin’s ‘maffs’ because it seemed like moving on was always after some emotional catharsis, but I speculated if it were to happen, it’d be Humphrey or the plague victims, the most marginal characters, both of which were confirmed didn’t happen. Although every ghost went on to have their own journey, except perhaps Pat and Kitty (Atomic Kitty!!!) it was the Captain, for whom we now have a name, whose death story was told. Obviously, it was about making stiff upper lips tremble, but I wondered if they’d always had this death story in mind, specifically because his honours were upside down (or if that had been a retconned mistake?) So, we now know his first name is James, and he too died an ignominious death. And gulp, we now know more or less how they all died.
I chuckled a lot throughout.

Date: 2023-11-15 03:02 pm (UTC)I expect they planned his death from the start, I feel like they'd have to plan each ghost's death and work backwards or it would be too vague. The writers are too clever to leave it vague.
Can't wait for the Christmas episode now, it's exciting!

Date: 2023-11-19 08:14 am (UTC)I loved Deep Space Nine when it first came out, and I'm meant to be in the middle of a rewatch, because there were definitely some episodes I missed, but that rewatch is on a break and I'm mainly concentrating on rewatching The West Wing. Ha, this is a reminder I should be getting on with that!

Date: 2023-11-19 11:53 am (UTC)DS9 is my favourite Star Trek series. I'm not a dedicated fan of Star Trek but DS9 was a good one. I particularly liked the relationship between Julian and Miles- they couldn't stand each other when they first met, but by the end of the series they couldn't do anything without each other!😅 Great writing.
I also loved Babylon 5, also set on a space station, did you watch that?

Date: 2023-12-01 07:02 am (UTC)I never watched Babylon 5. The sci fi TV show of my heart is Farscape, did you watch that?

Date: 2023-12-01 08:41 pm (UTC)Yes I will watch Star Trek if it's on but I won't rush to watch new series or whatever. There are so many new series of Star Trek now, I can't keep up with them all 😣
Babylon 5 is well worth watching if you get the chance. Amazing world-building and plot arcs in that show. I may have watched one episode of Farscape once, I should watch it from the start to get the full effect shouldn't I...Farscape is the one that was based on Blake's 7 from the 1970s, I read, do you know if that's true?

Date: 2023-12-02 08:37 am (UTC)Agreed. I watched the first episode of Discovery, then found it difficult to watch the next, gave it up without too much regret and that's at least three Star Trek series ago.
I'll add Babylon 5 to the list.
I don't remember Farscape being based on Blake's 7, exactly, but I think the consensus is B7 was an influence on it.

Ah maybe that was it about Farscape/Blake's 7. So many shows are based on other shows, it's all hard to work out and probably doesn't really matter does it 😋
