Ghosts 5.6 Last Resort
On the one hand, I can’t believe it’s over (and it isn’t quite, because of the Christmas episode), but it was a really good way to go. I mean, it was always obvious Mike’s friend had misunderstood the texts, but Thomas’s attitude towards his heartbreak was fun enough, and it worked as a reason to keep Alison and Mike from discussing the pros and cons together. The big dilemma of whether they should sell Button House as a golf resort wasn’t entirely a surprise because the Beeb had been using a clip of the ghosts’ reaction to advertise the series.
Fortunately, the big emotional twist was Alison discovering Julian had pushed her way back when, that the ghosts had wanted to kill her when she arrived, (I thought it was a bit mean that they all dumped it on him, because I remember they all wanted her gone.) But of all of them, he would find it most difficult to apologise. They’d all been about their usual level of annoying by jumping on pregnant!Alison and then ‘trying to be nice’ to make her want to stay and not sell, but this was about genuine hurt. And then Julian’s non-apology turned out to be perfect, and Alison (and Mike) chose not to sell their family home.
I liked that nearly all the ghosts had quite a lot of attention (maybe not the Captain, but he got the final shot, and maybe not Humphrey either. But they’d both had a lot of material in previous episdoes.) Robin namedropping Pythagoras on Pat! Kitty was made to act a bit weird For Plot – the whole business of falling into Alison and seeing the baby, but her being a blabbermouth was fun (they referenced that whole Robin/Mary thing, to my delight, as well as a couple of other callbacks), and being Kitty, she’d got it wrong anyway. The Cooper kid is going to have such a weird childhood.
Mostly they got it right, for me.
