shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Zoe Hart of Dixie)
[personal profile] shallowness
There’s no point in doing the fic writing meme separately. The only fanfiction that I posted last year can be found here. They’re all three-sentence fills, coming to a total of 752 words (you have to laugh.) Three were original fics, two were Hart of Dixie fics. I’m proud of how I filled the prompt ‘setting as character’ and anthropomorphised Bluebell in the longest HoD ficlet, The real Belle.

I was working on another HoD fic and another fic (for another fandom) but it got jossed, oh, and I drafted two other things, one of which was an out-there AU and the other not very cohesive at all at various points during 2024, but I haven’t felt the urge to get them to a point where I felt I could push them or write more fiction. Some of that is being out of sync with fandom, although what is ‘in sync’, given the random way streamers launch new shows? I only reposted three fics in 2024. We'll see if the ThreeSentenceFicathon unlocks anything more this year.

My version of the fandom meme

Your main fandom(s) of the year: For reading fic, Harry Potter, Marvel Cinematic Universe and The Rings of Power, where I felt I was playing catch up.

For writing fic, in as much as I did, it was Hart of Dixie, and as I finished watching that show this year, that was one of the TV shows I was fannish about, which would also include The Rings of Power, even if I watched it at my pace and continued to be behind. There’s also the rewatch of The West Wing, accompanied by listening to The West Wind Weekly. Strictly Come Dancing counts too, in terms of investment.

Films: Dune and Dune part 2, to a certain extent, the DCU because I went to see The Batman in the cinema, and Wicked part 1, and also Twisters in that I actively went to look for fic (where Kate and Tyler kissed!) I read ‘Spinning Silver’ by Naomi Novik in 2024, and found some really good fic for it.

Best film you watched this year: In the cinema: Dune part 2. (Dune was the best film that I saw in the cinema having already seen it on a small screen.)

On DVD: Past Lives (Inside Out was the best film I rewatched on DVD. I didn’t watch any Blu-Rays!)

Streaming: Nomadland, which I hadn’t seen before, but it was powerful and transcendental at times.

Best book you read this year: New: The Return of the Thief: Megan Whalen Turner (I know I haven’t posted about it, but I loved it.)

Reread: Sorcery & Cecilia: Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Steverner – epistolary Regency romance with magic!

Your favourite album and/or song to listen to this year: Tension by Kylie. I bought it right at the end of last year, and enjoyed listening to it a lot throughout the year. 'Padam Padam' and 'Hold On To Now' are probably the best songs, but the quality of the rest of it doesn’t dip much and it’s my favourite Kylie album for years. I think ‘Encore Un Fois’, ‘Freed from Desire’ and that Champs Elysee song will take me back to Paris 2024 whenever I hear them, and ‘Santa for Somebody’ by Jennifer Hudson encapsulated my build-up to Christmas!

Your favourite TV show of the year: I enjoyed Domino Day a lot, it reminded me of shows I held dear when I was younger (most obviously BtVS) and I thought it succeeded on its own terms. My Lady Jane grew on me, and I was invested enough to get frustrated by The Rings of Power season 2 (whereas I think Mr & Mrs Smith was a better show, but I didn’t take it to heart.) I was happy with the winner of The Masked Singer, and Strictly Come Dancing came good after a rocky build-up. But let’s be real, it’s still The West Wing (I watched most of season 6 and 7 during the year.)

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year: Not being able to see the end of Cardiac Arrest before it disappeared from iPlayer? Wow, that’s a pathetic answer, and it was mainly on me. I didn’t use the ‘grumbling’ tag in 2024. There were things that disappointed me – the execution of certain things, some shows and films – but I mostly came into them with tempered expectations.

Your biggest squee moments of the year: Dune part 2 was the film that lived up the most to my expectations. I'm probably forgetting something, but I'll go with rewatching the Josh/Donna first kiss and seeing him just about avoiding messing things up between them.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year: I’m looking forward to Thunderbolts for Yelena, although I have a much more tangled relationship with the MCU than I did. More straightforwardly, Wicked part 2! I still intend to watch The Wheel of Time season 2 (probably after finishing watching The Rings of Power season 2.) I clearly haven’t read enough previews to be able to answer this properly.

Favourite couple of 2024: TV: Robin/Strike although it feels like it’s being strung out even more than in the books. I had strong feelings about Zoe/Wade in Hart of Dixie, although many issues with how they’d executed them coming back together and the other endgame ships on Hart of Dixie. Although I’m still happily reading Galadriel/Halbrand season 1 fic (of the variety where the author refuses to countenance that he is what he turns out to be and where they hint at it, and I suspect the chemistry will draw me in despite objectively knowing that it’s bad and wrong), Tar-Miriel/Elendil was working for me in season 2, partly because woman in leadership/supportive man, it’s about faith and about them both supporting each other. Does the version of Selina Kyle and Batman seen in The Batman count? For books, I ship ‘Spinning Silver’s’ Irina/Mirnatius more than Miryem/Staryk.

Eh, after seven years, it’s still Donna/Josh, revisited.

Favourite main character of 2024: Elphaba? Does Galadriel count?

Favourite other character of 2024: CJ Cregg! Chani, more in Dune part 2 than part 1. Helen and Irene in ‘The Return of the Thief’.

Favourite team of 2024: I was supporting the effervescent Sarah and Vito, even though I objectively knew he wouldn’t win again because of Dianne and Chris, and JD and Lauren had improved at the right time. (Tasha and Aljiaz were always too good, but I am very grateful I got to see their showdance.)
