The Autobiography of Jane Eyre - Episode 50 to Q&A#4

Quite honestly, I put off watching ep 50 Dischordant because I could see that Rochester had a guitar in his hands. I was right to be wary. Never again, please! I cringed through the first minute and a half, never mind the foreshadowing. The conversation that followed (ha, they think that’s a fight) was better, the exchange about the constellations was good and dawn = teatime made me laugh full out. And while he did seem to accept that she was new to this, the last line proved that he didn’t get it/what she was saying. I like the tension of their rapport (although I thought the finishing each others’ lines bit wasn’t as genuine as he made out) versus what he’s doing being overwhelming, which she’s putting down to her inexperience, but is actually desperation from him.

Also, I see that Jane wrested back the tiara.

Ep 51 Storm
I liked Jane’s analysis of things, mostly agreed with her, was even surprised by the depth of her analysis – although the point isn’t ‘Should I stay with a guy who can’t communicate’? It’s ‘Should you rush into marriage?’ (The answer is: no.)

The storm was pretty well done (all effects?) although I’d feel they earned it more if they had managed the sound better all those times we’ve heard traffic at the apparently isolated house or when you know has been mumbling. Especially as Jane admitted to liking (some) grand gestures.

I was totally expecting a Bertha sighting. I know we got creaks, but no sighting during the lightning. And I did think the candle was far too close to the flowers.

Also, in the long list of absentees from the house, where was Pilot, eh? Okay, he’s probably used to Bertha, so he’s going to be useless in that regard.

Eo 52 A Nightmare
I see that this was posted the same night, but oh, it makes little sense to me that Jane posted the previous episode while freaking out.

Anyway, to start with such a freaked out Jane was powerful enough, but the simplicity and eeriness of what happened while she was sleeping was brilliant.

I don’t know about the humming – would Jane REALLY have slept through it? I suppose Bertha was inspired by hearing Jane reprising Edward’s stupid song. But having her wear THE VEIL while put her head so close to sleeping Jane’s was creepy and her blowing out the candle made me jump.

I suppose the electricity going out is what let Bertha out on the loose, but if Grace had had an eye to the weather, she wouldn’t have let Bertha be alone, would she? I am curious as to how they’ll handle the point about treating a mentally unwell woman in the modern world and not a Victorian Gothick when it all comes out.

Ep 53 Teenagers
This ep was about as convincing as Grace’s excuse. Would Jane and Grace have had that conversation then? Wouldn’t Grace have had time to come up with some better story for Jane? Rochester is totally lying about going to the police, but shouldn’t he be wondering if Jane + video = online? I’d also like some more explanation about why Jane is posting what when.

I presume Grace was excusing herself for not supervising Bertha by referencing Rochester’s own youthful mistakes. Well, she is Mrs Fairfax too, but that’s blackmail territory.

And really, I think Jane needed a big hug more than a snog from her fiancé.

Ep 54 Happy Holidays
Jane goes mad for Christmas (not surprising)! Rochester and Adele are awkward – seriously. I wish they’d played that up a little more so that we knew it was because they weren’t used to spending time together pre-Jane, because her fact spouting sits oddly with his quizzicalness. And, again, given the changes they’ve made to Adele, they’re not really addressing how Jane/Rochester come off around her. (Although the main problem was that the two performers were awkward without Alysson Hall, who is much more naturalistic).

I didn’t believe in the tea set (oh, ROCHESTER, fake getting her the set from the market would have been better than this. I half-hoped he was joking about their provenance. In fact, given the price and the way they were packed, I am going to pretend he was.)
But I guessed the socks were coming. <3 I don’t care if they’re beating tea/socks to death.

I’d have liked to have seen more of the picture.

So, Adele going to space camp is going to be what happens over the honeymoon, is it?

Q and A #4
Hijacked by Rochester, so the questions and answers were sandwiched around kisses. One obvious question would have been what was the question from a viewer about Jane’s thoughts of Rochester that she hadn’t answered in the previous session. Also, where did the poem come from?

‘Sincere’ – yeah, but no, Jane.

And while Rochester remembered Jane’s videos for five seconds, he didn’t remember the internet when he told her about his dead brother (AND THE INTERNET) or seem to have taken in that she posted Bertha’s visit. Or him promising to inform the police. (I don’t know if they’ll take on the implications of that.)

And that’s where the posts end on this page, but there seem to be more episodes on YouTube (which I’m happy to focus on, because I rarely found that the tweets or pictures added much). I suspect less kissing will be going on for a while.
