2014 fanfiction writing round-up

I posted nine fics this year, five were ficlets, but four passed the thousand-word mark, which is a lot for me. The only fandom I wrote more than once in was Downton Abbey, (ha!) most were obscure fandoms, or old or featured less popular pairings – this was brought home to me by writing a vignette in the MCU (it had three times the number of hits on AO3 of any other fic I wrote this year.) Six of these fics were based on prompts, mainly from lj's comment_fic. Six were het pairings, and I’d say I ship four of those pariting strongly, while the other two are canonical, and the other three fics were gen.
[February 2014]
you were not mine to find Revenge, PG-13, Amanda/Jack. Set at some point mid season 2. Double drabble.
I saw the prompt and thought ‘I could write this’. That was a big thing for me at that point.
How Tea and Socks go together The Autobiography of Jane Eyre, G, Jane/Rochester (or Tea/Socks). Anthropomorfic!AU. Summary: Socks needs Tea, and Socks gives Tea something she never had before. 226 words.
My cracky response to AoJE.
[March 2014]
you bear the weight of my gaze Lawless, Mature for references to canonical events, Maggie Beauford/Forrest Bondurant. Summary: Forrest watches Maggie. Maggie watches Forrest. 1,324 words.
I originally wrote the first draft of this after seeing the movie. I came across it and felt that it was almost ready – and rewatched the film to help make it ready to post. I think it's pretty obvious that I was about rebalancing the focus of the film and having a female perspective of the mutual gazing going on.
If I let you in The Musketeers, PG, Constance/D’Artagnan. Summary: Constance knows her new housemate is going to be trouble.Written for the prompt college au. Indirect spoilers up to 1.07, 3,159 words.
I was on a bit of a run now. This came very quickly – the college AU prompt allowed me to dodge the adultery and express some of my feelings about these two and, yes, their stupid faces. I liked writing a modern-day story set in ordinary Britain, while trying to bring in as many elements from the show as possible.
[June 2014]
Nothing Stays the Same Downton Abbey, G, Lady Edith Crawley. Summary: We all hurt/we all lie/and (we all learn that) nothing stays the same. Set between series 4 and the Christmas special, spoilers for the latter. 2,137 words.
This fic took longer to draft than If I let you in. I have Downton FEELINGS about this song, and I deliberately wanted to try to get into Edith’s head, although this fic also involved wading around in her emotions about her daughter and her parents, Michael, the past and the future. Doing so may have strenghtened my wish for her to be happy.
the safest hand is the one that lets go Downton Abbey, G, Elsie Hughes. Written for the prompt ‘Any, any non-wizard fandom, AU where someone gets a magic wand’ at comment_fic. 393 words.
Because ‘Any’ translated to Downton for my brain at that point. And I firmly believe Elsie Hughes is the best of them. So.
And then there was a little break – I did some slight tweaks to an old fic and replaced the old version with the new one where appropriate and posted it for the first time elsewhere. (I am dithering over doing the same to another fic, but I’ve been dithering about it for the past few months.)
What happened to stop the posting and, indeed, writing run was that I had a fic I’d been working on for years and feeling I had got about as far as I could go with it, got it beta read in the summer. It was a thorough job and a lot of constructive points were made, but it was clear that a lot more work was needed, and I...just didn’t do it. I had ideas, and if I had applied them, it would have been a start, but I didn’t. So, I turned to reposting fic and then got stalled on that until:
[October 2014]
Share and share alike Harry Potter, PG. Ginny/Neville, ER. Summary: She never wears his shirts, then one time she does. 1,092 words.
This was a comment fic fill that got pretty long. It didn’t have much of a response – perhaps because people have moved on. I mean, it is a fluffyish piece about pregnancy, but I don’t see that as an issue for this pairing, necessarily. Anyway, writing the fic was important for me, because the story flowed and grew from the idea that I got upon seeing the prompt, and it was actually the first time I’d completed a Neville/Ginny fic even though I have all sorts of squidgy feelings about them.
[November 2014]
Girl versus River X-men movieverse, PG. Rogue. Written for the prompt 'Yeah, the river it spoke to me. It told me I’m small, and I swallowed it down' at comment-fic. Post X2) 119 words.
got my sights set on you Marvel Cinematic Universe, PG - if that, Darcy/Clint. Written for the prompt ‘MCU, any, wearing green tights to play Robin Hood for a costume party (bonus if it's not Clint)’ at comment-fic. 238 words.
Two ficlets in November! (Never mind last month.)
I would love to find a way to recapture and maintain that run in springtime, especially if I could write 1,000 to 3,000 word fics. I am aware that I probably want things to come a little too easily, but I also have a tendency to pick over details and write a fic into a standstill, so it never gets posted. (I even have fanfiction writing round-up anxiety, because I've seen much more thoughtful versions, bu people who can write longer, better stuff.)
