The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, from 'Dear Lizzie' to Ep 78 'The Lizzie Trap'

Saw ‘Dear Lizzie’. Ouch. Someone was in a temper when they filmed that! (But I wondered ‘Will Lizzie even watch this?’)

Ep 74 ‘How to Hold a Grudge’.

Thank you, Charlotte for ensuring that the answer was 'yes'! Epic sisterly fight, with their hurt – Lizzie’s cluelessness – and knowledge of each other’s weak points feeding their anger. Clever use of everyone being away at this point in the novel as a weapon for Lydia. And that’d be another vid uploaded in a temper. (I always like in 'verse acknowledgements of thought before posting trickier vids or reasons for why the characters override that, even as the viewer in me always wants to see as much as possible.)

Ep 75 Merry Christmas (surely given the content it should have been ‘Happy Holidays’.)

Oh Lizzie and co, several of your viewers were probably spending (part of) Christmas reading Yuletide fic about you. Very nice make-up for Charlotte and Jane and a very Janeish response to Lizzie and Lydia’s continuing fighting.

Lydia 20 – yep, she’s still furious; 21 – ditto (with glittery make-up) in sounds off!Vegas.

22 So Vegas was a fake-out in a way. I had wondered if they were going to turn an elopement into a marriage, but it was just that she bumped into Wickham. I am surprised she didn’t film any of it. Hmm, I wonder if the museum that her friends pleaded was real? Anyway, the genuine hurt, mainly stemming from Lizzie’s behaviour, remains.

Ep 76 Wishing Something Universal

Ooops, watched this out of order, so I’ll just delete one sentence about the last three episodes. Oh Lizzie, if you could just express your protectiveness better, you middle child, you!

Meanwhile the Vegas explanation of Mr and Mrs Bennet is perfect (and would have worked as set up for Lydia’s opening of her ep 23 if I’d watched it in order.)

And then to Pemberley!

Ep 77 Tour Leader

Well, I knew ‘Gigi’ was coming from spoilers (and would have guessed it as a book reader). Good casting lookswise. Oh, Lizzie, did you not Google Pemberly Digital first thing upon getting told that was where you were going? And my love, if Caroline watched it, why are you surprised that other people who know Darcy, especially ones who work in a company with Digital in its name. wouldn’t know of the vlogs? Darling, silly girl.

Good attempt to convince us about the amazing topiary with the tree in the background though.

Meanwhile Gigi and her amusement (and probable Lizzie/Darcy shipping tendencies), seems nice.

Lydia 23 Mistakes

The actor playing Wickham is ridiculously hot. So, I sat there listening, knowing what I know from the book and having picked up some clues in past eps that this 'verse isn’t deviating from a certain revelation and not hating on Lizzie, unlike Lydia, I was unmoved by ‘Wick’ and his version of the Prodigal Son’s story. Yes, Lizzie can be judgemental, but she has some sense, even if Lydia doesn't share all her standards. (Lydia has more sense than book!Lydia. Though Lizzie doesn’t see that owning up to your mistakes/apologising counts for a lot with Lydia, because she doesn’t see her mistake(s).) Still, enjoying the view in this vid, if less involved than at Lizzie’s awkward predicament.

(Nicely done in introducing Gigi and bringing Wickham back at about the same time, LBD.)

Ep 78 The Lizzie Trap

A+. Well, the last bits anyway.

So, first we have Lizzie realising she’s more or less alone in this city/out in the big wide world, which is what Jane wanted for her. Or rather, Jane wanted the growth that would come as a result of that. Although she’s not quite alone, but she can’t figure Gigi out. I thought Gigi’s behaviour had something to do with Darcy – maybe manouvering Lizzie to stay out of his way because he didn’t know she was there...

Except no – much more awesome than that.

I LOVED the framing of the interaction, both the echo to his headless entrance and harking back to the fact that Darcy’s been a Newsie cap and bow-tie for so long. It also plays on the fact that we don’t get to see everything (which I’ve always thought the show could do more of/with). But we got enough from the body language.

I LOVED that Gigi (I see what the fuss is about her, fandom) was clearly eavesdropping, because she’s a shipper and has loved what she’s seen of Lizzie and what she’s made of her brother. And not only is she a shipper, but she’s a viewer, doing for us what we would do.

The convo was both awkward and glorious. They got over that this was a more relaxed Darcy on home turf, despite the awkward, which Lizzie maybe felt more. He was also so happy to see her and that she likes his sister and his company because he looooooves her. And she was, in a petty, petty way glad that his nice sister was crazy too. And feeling a thousand things she can’t quantify. SHE TOUCHED HIS ARM. She didn’t need to – except she did, because she said she was going to dinner, but not that it was with Professor Gardener and she refused his lift and he said ‘Understood’, which I took to mean that he took to mean meant that she wanted to avoid him, but he was going to be nice about it. If she's been affected by the letter, he's been affected by the vlogs. But she touched his arm, because she wasn’t thinking. And he will take that as a sign. HE SHOULD.

And look how much I wrote about Lizzie/Darcy as compared with everything else.

The subject line was brought to you by the fact that I was watching Americans on a screen talking about Christmas in April.
