shallowness: Margaret Hale of North and South adaptation sitting at desk writing (Margaret North and South writing)
I posted two X-Men: Dark Phoenix ficlets over the weekend. One was ‘broken promise’ a Scott POV prompt fill responding to the events of the movie, and the other was ‘The Most Dangerous Player on the Tour’, a tennis AU take on the events of the movie. Jean being the player in question. This is what happens when I go to see X-Men Dark Phoenix on the closing weekend of the French Open. I’ve started many tennis AUs in my time, but never posted any before. I suspect no actual newspaper would publish anything like that, but it was fun translating characters and their mutations into the world of tennis.

I saw that people were doing a first lines meme just as I was about to post the above – dilemma! What do you do? I swept through my first lines of the last 10 fics on AO3. Some I liked more than others. I was chuffed that they were all from 2019.

Fine. I’ll do the last lines meme.

It's an appropriate day to do some shipposting, right?

Selina Kyle/Bruce Wayne AKA Catwoman/Batman (most iterations of Batman, but most recently Gotham).

Phew. If I do more shipposting, it's likely to be less extensive.

For maximum stun effect, Portishead’s cover of S.O.S. (yes, the ABBA song) probably needs to be heard straight after watching the weird, sporadically brilliant High Rise. But if you’d like to hear an eerie, powerful take on the song, click on.

And now for something chirpier! Maybe.

I posted #blessed (enough to set the phone aside) yesterday. Mary Poppins Returns. Teen. Jane Banks/Jack. 456 words. Because I am that person who came out of Mary Poppins Returns with an idea for a modern day AU ficlet!?!?

This is inspired by the 'What were you into 10 years ago?' meme/question. Ten years ago, I wasn't on Dreamwidth yet, but I posted the following at Livejournal.

Candlelight, Sky High, G. Layla/Warren (established relationship). 300 words. Written (self-indulgently) for 2009’s Epiphany wishkiss ficathon. Summary: Layla helps Warren close up at The Paper Lantern. First posted: 18 January 2009.

A few things: I watched Bill on iPlayer - it's hilarious (in a way that Holmes and Watson wasn't). King Phillip of Spain reminded me of Villanelle with the deconstruction.

Pick has pulled Blindspot just as I was getting invested, and who knows when it will air it again? I'm considering DVDs.

I'm in the middle of reading Jane, Unlimited. Having just finished the Espions Sans Frontieres section, I have issues.

As I said that Le Kov was my favourite album of last year, here's Tir ha Mor from it. I hadn't seen the video before - it's psychadelic - but I hope you see why I love the music.

There are more ficlets that I intend to post once I get back into the swing of things.

Four things

Apr. 2nd, 2018 09:05 am
shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (POI Shaw)
I spent the end of March posting a lot of recs at [livejournal.com profile] het_reccers before it came to an end. I may repost them at a more lesiurely pace at [dreamwidth.org profile] het_reccers, which asks for slightly different information). What I’ve learned: to stop being precious about the content of my recs, which may have been why my reccing at the comms dropped off - when I'm reccing here, I'm much more chilled because it's my space; it’s easier to post a few recs in a go than masses because of fiddly HTML; I liked a lot of het fic from Yuletide 2015.

Also, if anyone who, like me, liked Taraji P. Henson as Joss Carter in Person of Interest, saw the trailer for ‘Proud Mary’ and thought ‘Ooh’, profit from my experience: it’s dull. You're really better off watching a couple of PoI eps. Kudos to whoever made the trailer, but it makes the film look way better than it is.

Thirdly, I posted a ficlet yesterday: Not Quite a Gulp (Sherlock, U. Molly Hooper (Molly/Sherlock). 125 words. Set during ‘The Final Problem’). I wrote it the weekend before last, when the prompt 'magpie' made me think of the scenario, let it rest, got the idea for the title and posted it. I hope to post a few more ficlets over the coming days as a sort of spring cleaning because since finishing the reccing, I’ve been looking over what I thought were snippets, polishing them and writing new bits and bobs.

Fourthly, I intend to play TV catch up today so perhaps I’ll be posting about the results of that.
shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Wives and Daughters Molly/Roger)
I haven't been posting or around much because my Freeview box played up (I thought it was my remote, but no), which means I'm still catching up on TV. Furthermore, I fell down a figurative rabbit hole (drawerfic) and I'm not sure I'm out yet. And the warnings for this show made it not the sort of show you want to be eating along to. But anyway, there has been snow in my neck of the woods, and I got around to watching this.

Expandspoilers for the adaptation and the book )

The one advantage of not having caught up with it until now is that I have less time to wait for part 2. And then after that...

I've just checked. We have a title, but no publication date for book 4.
shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Default)
From Monday to today seems to have been swallowed up by a vortex. I’ve only had snatches online. Back on Sunday, I posted The Princess and the Dragons of Many Hues. PG. Original/Fairy Tale
Characters: A princess, her sisters, a king, a queen, a governess, servants, subjects, artists and a lover, and various dragons.
Summary: In a world where there are dragons of many hues, it took this princess to approach them.
(1,505 words.) Inspired by rather than a fill for the prompt: Fairy Tales, any, a dragon of a different colour.

ExpandThe writing thereof, film trailers and Pacific Rim feelings )

Later tonight, I’ll post my thoughts about the TV I’ve watched this week.
shallowness: Margaret Hale of North and South adaptation sitting at desk writing (Margaret North and South writing)
I’ve been writing very self-indulgent stuff of late, most of which is probably never going to get posted. I was planning to post an edited WIP meme, just to record that some of those fics had been started, to prove that I’d been writing more than I’d posted and perhaps in the hope of it encouraging me to continue to the point where I’d post one of them. I hope to post more than one of them eventually.

Anyway, what happened instead is that this week a few prompts got me writing ficlets:

All dessed up and nowhere to go Christmas-set original micro fiction. (308 words.) The POV and tone came to me when I saw the prompt and the ending as I wrote it. No, it’s not fanfic, but it feels apt at the close of the year Wonder Woman got her movie.

Then [dreamwidth.org profile] autumnia pointed me to the three sentence ficathon, which I’d missed out on, and two prompts made me think of Layla and Warren.

Call Me Sky High. Universal. Layla/Warren. (106 words.) Written for the prompt ‘Any, any, mouthful of names you used to breathe on me’.

Where Beauty Wears a Mask Sky High. Universal. Warren/Layla. (90 words.) Written for the prompt ‘Any, any, where beauty wears a mask’. Can be read as a companion piece to ‘Call Me’.

I hope to do my annual writing meme in the next couple of days.
shallowness: bright flowers in vase against green background (flowers that remind me of Layla)
Normally, I don’t feel the need to address that this is a fannish space, it just is, and I rarely comment on non-fannish stuff. But the news was horrible (and I have a real grown-up problem to contend with at some point, but that feels like privileged whining.) So I went back and forth on whether to even mention it last night and posted nothing. Below, then, fannish stuff, as per usual.

I posted some fanfic at the end of last week. the moon’s daughter (Gotham, Selina/Bruce futurefic, PG). Although other iterations of Catwoman informed the fic, I wanted the backstory Gotham offers for this fic. Why have they stopped airing Gotham in the UK, by the way? I didn’t know if the two different halves melded together until I found what I think is a nice bridge for them. I was too lazy/precious to make it a triple drabble.

I also wrote Tri ci bach (BtVS, Anya/Giles, post s6, PG) which I admit is self-indulgent and a bit revealing. In both cases, it has been lovely to get feedback.

Both fics were written when I should have been working on the ending of a much longer fic. Ahem.

I was toying with dropping Electric Dreams, but then I realised Tuppence Middleton was in The Commuter, so I stuck with it, and I’m glad I did. ExpandRead more... )

The OPI Summer Challenge via [personal profile] musesfool.

The puns made me do it! Using OPI nail colours as prompts, this seems a low-key fanworks challenge (at least 500 words for fic, so if there's something that inspires me, I could manage that) for the summer. You can prompt without filling and fill without prompting. I have prompted stuff I'd love to read, so...
shallowness: HP films' Minerva reads the Daily Prophet (Minerva reads)
At the start of the week, it was twenty years since ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ was first published. After an initial ‘eek’ at that, even though I was fine with realising OK Computer is twenty years old also, it’s been interesting to read about how people have grown up with the series, and with it being such a phenomenon it doesn’t feel overblown to say that or to think about it’s influence in shaping social attitudes. There was the issue of the series getting a generation to read. There are people who read the series for whom it wasn’t a gateway drug to other books, for example, although I hope it got more people into reading more widely than would otherwise have happened, and it’s certainly a factor in the explosion of geek culture and the rise of the fantastic.

shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Kensi and Deeks partners NCIS LA)
I have just got out of a rabbit-hole of sorting out my icons, motivated by the fact that i. Poldark is coming back this weekend (I appreciate their wanting to avoid Victoria, but couldn’t they have waited for Agents of SHIELD to finish? Perhaps it’s not an obvious overlap to the schedulers, but it includes me, and the way AoS is currently firing on many cylinders and its fight scenes will make me choose that first.) ii. I have stuff to say about NCIS: LA, so I’ve got icons and iii. I have more icon slots than I thought on LJ!?

I’ve been continuing to mainline the top and tail of season 3 of NCIS: LA. Expandspoilers )
shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Rogue X-Men Films)
I am behind on B99 as someone called me while I was watching it last week and I never got caught up and so didn't watch the latest episode last night. I could have got caught up instead of watching NCIS:LA...however, I saw the last two episodes of season 2, 'Imposters' and 'Familia'.

Some thoughts, ExpandRead more... )

And I have seen Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge, and when I have time, I will type up a full response, but it was much like the other sequels to the brilliant Curse of the Black Pearl, entertaining in fits, not as good as the original and best, although trading on goodwill for it. I didn't stay to see if there was a scene after the credits, but I'll probably buy it on DVD, because I'm a completist and it did nothing to put me right off the franchise a la Jason Bourne and The Huntsman Winter's War.

The trailers for the coming blockbusters made me feel like it'll be slim pickings this summer. I'll be looking to the counter-programming.
shallowness: Sky High's Warren Peace smiling (Warren Peace smiles!)
On Tuesday I posted my first new fic of the year and the first one for six months: Extreme Action, a Sky High, Layla/Warren futurefic. It was first drafted in July 2015, which wasn’t a wonderful time for me. Having a title that would suit an early 90s action flick better than a fluffy tropefic appealed to me, apparently. Anyway, a couple of months ago, as I was doing looking through some drafts, I found that this one didn’t need much work – usually I have stalled before coming up with an ending. In the editing process, it passed the thousand word mark, et voila.

For completeness on Livejournal: this spring, I’ve also reposted the following fics at Dreamwidth and A03. ExpandRead more... )
