...when I posted Far, Far Better (Harry Potter, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Harry (R/Hr) ficlet, universal). I saw the prompt and felt confident writing Hermione etc because I’d just finished and posted ‘Some Goodnight Kisses’. The book she was reading being by Dickens was inspired by 'Murder on the Orient Express', and the title comes from ‘A Tale of Two Cities’. There would have been more Dickens references if I’d read more by him. But I think Hemione might like him for the social reform agenda.

On Friday, I posted a fic: Some Goodnight Kisses (Harry Potter, Ron/Hermione ER, 2,634 words!, teen). The prompt is from the first of August, and I think I started writing it then. Even the first draft was longer than my usual fics. It got tweaked in various edits and [dreamwidth.org profile] king_touchy helpfully made me realise I needed to do more with the ending. It’s the first time I’ve focused so much on Ron/Hermione as a writer, even though they’re an OTP. Mainly, I am chuffed to have written something of this length, even though that meant it took longer to edit and to post.

shallowness: HP films' Minerva reads the Daily Prophet (Minerva reads)
At the start of the week, it was twenty years since ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ was first published. After an initial ‘eek’ at that, even though I was fine with realising OK Computer is twenty years old also, it’s been interesting to read about how people have grown up with the series, and with it being such a phenomenon it doesn’t feel overblown to say that or to think about it’s influence in shaping social attitudes. There was the issue of the series getting a generation to read. There are people who read the series for whom it wasn’t a gateway drug to other books, for example, although I hope it got more people into reading more widely than would otherwise have happened, and it’s certainly a factor in the explosion of geek culture and the rise of the fantastic.

I got to see the film during the week. Thumbs up. Not my favourite film of the year, but lots of fun with enough to chew on.

I watched quite a bit of Children in Need last night, I usually don't, and was reminded of the reasons why last night, but I was dipping in and out of doing other stuff too. Mainly I wanted to catch the Strictly bit and the Fantastic Beasts-adjacent sketch. Read more... )

Isn’t it great about Tatyana Maslany winning an Emmy? I couldn’t keep up with the Orphan Black and didn’t love it enough to buy the DVD, but her performances as the clones were thoroughly impressive.

I'm not going to discuss the thing that happened in the UK today, because this is a place to express my fannishness and talk about popculture for me, beyond wondering if Rowling will be able to resist using this period as a setting for one of her Cormoran Strike mysteries, eventually. Anyway, I finished 'The Silkworm' by Robert Galbraith AKA J.K. Rowling last night. I was fairly gripped by the story, so I hope I can get across the third book soon (but I'd like to have it in hardback, as I've done with the frist two so it depends on how quickly I come across a second-hand copy, really.)

I published two (three sentence) ficlets on Tuesday, both gen, focused on two female characters I hadn’t written before. They were originally posted at [dreamwidth.org profile] 3sentencesfic at the end of March. I’d hoped to write more ficlets for it, but I didn’t manage it. (However, I’ve just seen an intriguing meme...)

Finally for now, I saw Zootropolis (can someone explain why the title was changed from Zootopia in the UK?) which was very entertaining. Judy Hopps, ILU. It features 'bunny saves fox'. I hope there are sequels - there's plenty of potential in the world they've created and the characters that inhabit it - and I see that AO3 has hundreds of fics already.
