You can tell it’s a good episode when, besides enjoying it at the time, more and more things occur to you afterwards.

Real life problems have completely upended my plans for the weekend, like catching up on TV shows, but I’m snatching some downtime to post this now.

I’m looking forward to the next series. While not as faultless as its most ardent fans claim (I have a right to watch it wrong in my haven’t read the books/ignorant way!) there’s been much that’s excellent about it. It has been gripping and complex and a sharp corrective to lazy, superficial thinking about ‘Ye Olde Tudor Times’.

The Good Wife 6.5 Shiny Objects

Crammed episode, but I think there were some things maybe could have worked better, and I’m really wondering about the future ramifications’ of a a couple of decisions, for the direction of the show more than for the character, first and foremost.

I am so behind on telly, but one show I’m not picking up on is The Casual Vacancy, because I read the book and was sufficiently depressed by it not to want to go through the same thing again or a slightly adapted version that the Beeb is touting as ‘original’.

Yes, it's a terrible time to post this now with everyone gearing up for Yuletide and Christmas holidays, plus it's four months since I last did a recs post, so no wonder there are too many for me to post in one go, but here are 20 fanfiction and fanvid recs in the following fandoms: Alice (SyFy); Avengers; The Bourne Legacy; Brooklyn Nine-Nine; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Community; The Good Wife; Harry Potter; The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug; The Hour; The Hunger Games; Into the Storm (2014); Man of Steel; Mr and Mrs Smith; The Night Circus and Orphan Black.

Meanwhile, on the Emmys, yay for Julianna Margulies (although Tatiana Maslany should have been nominated!). I feel miffed on Josh Charles's part - I obviously didn't see all the other actors and have zero desire to watch Breaking Bad however good it is - because I thought he was genuinely outstanding in the season that's gone of The Good Wife.

I'm also pleased about the Sherlock wins - 3.03 was the best episode of the last series. I've been on a bit of a Sherlock kick recently. Specifically, Sherlock/Molly (Sherlolly is one of the stupider portmanteau names as it makes me think of lollipops.) It's strange, in that I'm not sure that I actually want it to happen in canon, but if fic writers want to convince me that it would be a good step for both characters, I'll happily buy into it. The more I read, the more it'll bleed into my attitude when watching the show (three episodes and a Christmas special!) Also, I shold note that me being me, with the time I take to get around to reading fic, I'm reading fic produced between season 2 and 3.

I had a Matthew Goode double-bill last night, of sorts, as he turns up in Belle, a costume drama about intersectionality. Although that description is true - it’s a film based on a true life story and it’s heroine is Dido Belle Lindsay, the mixed race member of an upper class eighteenth century English family – it’s also a coming of age story and a love story with a rootable, nuanced heroine.

It also allowed me to make ‘Emily of’ jokes because there’s a character called Elizabeth Murray, made me long to see Penelope Wilton in a Georgette Heyer adaptation and makes me think that Tom Felton’s agent should try harder to avoid typecasting.

And then there was the Good Wife

So, I posted Nothing Stays the Same on Friday morning. It was my 'attempt to get into Edith's head between the Christmas special and series 4' fic. I started writing it in longhand before typing it up, because it's easier to edit that way. I also listened to the song of the same title several times and debated with myself whether the ending/whole thing was too sentimental or not. I think it's okay, given the subject matter, it's Edith and it's Downton Abbey! Despite the fact that I think I watch the show differently from most viewers, I do find I have fic I want to write about it.

While I remember, a thing I learned this week was that Makenzie Vega was in X-Men 3 spoiler? ). The rewatch is continuing – I am now willing to concede that X2 is more assured than X-Men, X-Men 3's script needed another few drafts and my interest in The Wolverine dipped whenever Yukio wasn't on screen.. I read that the show has been renewed for the third season. I wasn't really aware that that was in doubt. I think it's improved, and got me to care more about more characters. Plus, after souring me on my favourite ship in the second half of season 1 (although I still think they're endgame), it gave me a new favourite ship in the second.
